Menorca is far quieter than its glamorous neighbour Mallorca Island and the smaller of the two islands has become a firm favourite with families from mainland Spain, from the UK and from Germany. There is much to do and see on Menorca, lie the Fortress La Mola on the northern side of Mahon harbour for example or Fort Marlborough, located east of Es Castell in Cala San Esteban. The Fort dates back to the time when the island was under British rule, just like the 19th century defence tower Torre de Fornells, which can be reached on foot from the Fornells. The Fornells is also home to a small castle, the Castell de Sant Antoni.

During ancient times Menorca was invaded by the Romans and the only town that is known to have existed on the island has been discovered in the northern tip of Menorca, close to the Fornells. Here visitors will find the Ecomuseu de Cap de Cavalleria with a small museum and bar.

Menorca is surprisingly mountainous and a wonderful walk with views over the island can be enjoyed at Castell de Santa Agueda, which is located just a few kilometres from Ferreries, off the main Mahon – Ciutadella ME-1 road. This was once a Roman stronghold and a footpath leads to the ruin on the island’s second highest peak. The walk takes just 15 minutes up a rocky path before joining the 2,000 year-old Roman road that leads up to the castle ruin on the hill.
